Elon Musk has launched a new company called Neuralink, with the idea of exploring ‘neural lace’ technology. According to him, Neuralink will be doing medical research on potential benefits of embedding electronic devices in the human brain.

According to the founder of Tesla, Space X, and Solar City, this can improve human performance in certain areas, like for example memory. He registered the company in California, last June, and as announced we can expect more information about their research in the near future.

Given the recent comments, there’s no surprise many interpreted this as Mr. Musk’s desire to create cyborgs. The idea is to use neural lacing to achieve direct communication with the machines. It would diminish the need for any additional interfaces. Furthermore, it would enable people to upload and download thoughts to computers. The tech magnate also expressed a fear that as a species, we are at risk of becoming irrelevant, and that merging with machines is essential and inevitable.

Over time I think we will probably see a closer merger of biological intelligence and digital intelligence. It’s mostly about the bandwidth, the speed of the connection between your brain and the digital version of yourself – particularly output, Musk said at the World Government Summit in Dubai.

On the other hand, the tech research in Silicon Valley is all about creating a computer interface that will be able to scan the user’s brain. CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg was talking about new technology that will be capable of capturing a thought. He further described it as such a sophisticated technology that will allow the computer to detect and share a complete thought and the feeling, exactly the way it was formed in the mind.
