Millennials prioritise the in-store experience in apparel shopping

A ChangeUp report reveals 70% of millennials choose apparel retailers based on in-store experience, valuing alignment with their values more than any other demographic. Gen Z, despite being digital natives, is equally likely to shop in-store but finds it stressful, signalling a need for improved engagement.

Gen X prefers a quality shopping environment over low prices, while boomers often feel overlooked, with only 37% feeling understood by retailers. Nike and Levi’s rank highest for in-store experience across all generations, while traditional department stores lag. The study urges brands to design spaces that truly resonate with customers.

Home Bargains trials AI-powered anti-theft tech

Home Bargains is testing AI-driven CCTV at two Liverpool stores to crack down on self-checkout theft. Partnering with SAI and Everseen, the tech tracks if items are scanned before leaving. With studies showing 33% of shoppers admit to stealing at self-checkouts—often fruit, veg, and bread—the discount chain aims to stop “swipers” more efficiently than using guards.

Posters warn that offenders may face civil or criminal action even after leaving. This follows their 2023 £500 tip-off reward scheme. The initiative aligns with broader retail trends, as Asda trials live facial recognition amid rising theft and staff assaults.

Trump tariffs to trigger price hikes at Shein and Temu

Fast-fashion giants Shein and Temu have warned US shoppers of imminent price hikes as Donald Trump’s new tariffs on Chinese imports take effect. The end of the “de minimis” exemption—previously allowing duty-free imports under $800—means taxes up to 145% on Chinese goods from 2 May. Shein will adjust prices starting 25 April, citing rising operational costs.

Temu and Shein have also cut ad spending on major US platforms by 31% and 19% respectively, signalling tighter budgets. Despite higher prices, experts say both may remain cheaper than competitors, though consumer behaviour could shift as costs rise.
