Canadian families face emotional and financial risk due to rising costs

A new study by the Money Wise Institute reveals a growing disconnect between Canadian parents and their children on inheritance expectations. While 80% of parents cite rising living costs as the top threat to leaving a legacy, 55% of Millennials and Gen Z still expect one.

Over half of parents expect to spend most of their wealth, with 22% feeling guilty for prioritising their financial security. The lack of planning tools and unequal gifting create tension, with many fearing sibling disputes. Experts stress the need for financial professionals to guide families through emotionally charged conversations and structured legacy planning.

Despite rising tariff concerns, Amazon reports no drop in demand or price hikes

Despite widespread concerns about tariffs, Amazon shoppers aren’t pulling back, according to CEO Andy Jassy. Speaking at the company’s virtual shareholder meeting, Jassy noted there’s been no drop in demand or significant price hikes. This contrasts with other major retailers: Walmart plans to raise prices, prompting President Trump to urge it to “eat the cost,” while Home Depot won’t raise prices and Target may.

Jassy credits Amazon’s large, diverse marketplace for keeping prices competitive. His comments contrast with a Trade Winds study showing 75% of Americans expect tariffs soon and over half plan to cut non-essential spending as a result.

China tightens internet censorship in Henan

A new study reveals that internet censorship in China’s Henan province is five times stricter than the national average, affecting tens of millions. Researchers found 4.2 million domains blocked in Henan between late 2023 and early 2025, compared to 741,500 nationally.

The region’s crackdown, largely targeting business-related sites, may be linked to recent financial protests. While regional internet restrictions have occurred in Xinjiang and Tibet, Henan’s case is unusual. China’s censorship, powered by advanced AI tools, continues evolving, enhancing government surveillance and resistance efforts. The origin of Henan’s intensified controls remains unclear.
