Trump administration moves to shut down Federal Mediation Agency
The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) has been effectively shut down by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) following a March 14 decree by President Trump. The move, aimed at reducing federal agency functions, has drawn strong criticism, with AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler vowing legal action.
The FMCS, which helps resolve labour disputes, had a minimal budget impact but played a crucial role in negotiations. Critics argue its closure will lead to prolonged contract disputes, economic disruptions, and weakened worker protections, reinforcing concerns that the administration prioritises billionaires over working Americans.
Elderly Polish woman faces deportation over application error
Elzbieta Olszewska, 80, faces deportation after the UK Home Office rejected her residency application because it was submitted online instead of on paper. Olszewska moved to the UK to be cared for by her son, Michal Olszewski, a British citizen. Despite applying within her visa period, the Home Office only responded after six months, declaring the application invalid.
Now undocumented, she risks detention and removal. Her solicitor, Katherine Smith, calls the decision harsh and plans a judicial review. Olszewski condemns the process, likening it to Soviet bureaucracy. The Home Office declined to comment on the case.
H&M’s AI models spark industry backlash
H&M plans to create AI “twins” of 30 models for marketing, raising concerns about job losses in fashion. While models can license their digital doubles, critics fear broader industry impacts, from makeup artists to lighting crews.
Advocates like Model Alliance’s Sara Ziff question fair compensation and regulation as AI risks replacing entry-level models. Casting agent Chloe Rosolek calls it a cost-cutting move, while H&M insists it maintains a “human-centric” approach. With upcoming AI regulations, the debate over AI’s role in fashion intensifies, as many hope consumers will reject digital models in favour of human creativity.
