PayPal+ Delivers Free Loyalty Scheme for UK Online and In-Store Shoppers

Loyalty programs have been around forever, and are regularly tweaked to meet the changing needs of customers. But a major all-new scheme is a rare beast. Enter PayPal with PayPal+, aiming to shake up shopping for UK consumers. The new scheme, live today, also acts as a well-timed seasonal relaunch for the PayPal brand.

Offering both a new digital wallet and a physical debit card (a Mastercard) to make shopping and earning points easier. The scheme works as long as you check out with PayPal or use the debit card. PayPal+ looks like a comprehensive and attractive offer.

Naturally, PayPal is driving use of the debit card, as that earns 10X points compared to other payment methods. We’re chasing PayPal for some detail on the customer experience and development side of the story.

Loyalty and Shopping: A Bigger CX Story

From groceries to airline tickets, eBay purchases to digital games, getting rewarded across the board for shopping sounds like an attractive proposition.

As those points add up, consumers can unlock Gold and Black tiers with further rewards. Like points worth up to 50% more when you shop for groceries (while also collecting your Tesco Clubcard or other points).

Members who reach the Black tier can earn up to £440 in value every year. In an evolving loyalty landscape, will this help move PayPal’s needle?

Looking for the Big Rewards With PayPal+

Rewards come in the form of direct savings on purchases, cash back or gift cards to use in stores. Users can also donate to charity.

“This is the start of an exciting new chapter for PayPal in the UK. We’ve listened to our customers and reimagined our products into one unified solution, offering the smarter way to pay both online and in-stores,” said Diego Scotti, General Manager of PayPal’s Consumer Group.

“With PayPal+, we’ve flipped the script on loyalty. That means no fees where others charge, a new debit card that delivers 10 times as many points, and more ways to get rewarded for everyday spend, including Buy Now Pay Later. This will redefine what value looks like with every payment.”

Adding the debit card and getting a physical one posted is a simple task for existing PayPal customers. Those who need to sign up for PayPal will need to go through a few more steps.

“Our investment reflects a deep commitment to British consumers, businesses, and communities,” said Tamer El‑Emary, General Manager of PayPal UK. “We’ve listened to our customers and built products that rethink how people use PayPal every day.”

“For years, millions of people have trusted PayPal when they shop online or on their phones. Now we want to bring everything they love about PayPal online to the high street. Simple, secure, and now with PayPal+ it’s more rewarding.”
