Want More Productive Employees? Fix Your Health Benefits First

Many UK employees aren’t taking advantage of workplace health benefits, with over a third (34%) saying they simply don’t use them. According to new research by Simplyhealth, more than half of those who do use their benefits face frustrating barriers, like needing managerial approval, navigating confusing processes, or discovering their pre-existing conditions aren’t covered.
The study surveyed 500 HR professionals and 2,000 employees and found that simplifying access could drive up usage. In fact, 37% said they’d be more likely to use their benefits if the process were easier, and others pointed to faster claim payments and not needing time off for appointments as key motivators.
Despite employer enthusiasm, especially as NHS wait times increase, most businesses still struggle to offer benefits that are accessible and inclusive. Nearly 9 in 10 employers expressed concerns, particularly around finding plans that work for people with pre-existing health conditions.
Still, health benefits are far from trivial. Nearly half of employees say they influence job loyalty, and more than half believe they’d be more productive and take fewer sick days if they had better access.
Simplyhealth CEO Paul Schreier puts it plainly: health benefits are a win-win, but only if they’re easy to use. And as the NHS leans more heavily on prevention, businesses have a chance to step up and fill the gap.“
Employers recognise the huge responsibility they have to support the health of their people and the value it creates in terms of reducing long-term sickness and boosting productivity. Workplace health benefits are a big part of these efforts, but too often traditional offers are complex and difficult to access.
