AWS and SAP Team Up to Bring Sovereign Cloud Capabilities to Europe

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SAP have expanded their collaboration to deliver SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities on the new AWS European Sovereign Cloud. Backed by a planned €7.8 billion investment, this initiative aims to give European organisations, particularly in the public sector and highly regulated industries, greater control over their data while advancing opportunities for AI-driven innovation.
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud, set to open its first Region in Brandenburg, Germany by the end of 2025, will operate independently from AWS’s existing regions and infrastructure outside the EU. It promises to meet key sovereignty requirements such as data residency, operational autonomy, and regulatory compliance.
SAP Sovereign Cloud, already deployed with AWS in markets including Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, and India, brings security-hardened cloud solutions tailored for industries with stringent compliance needs. By making these solutions available on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, customers will gain access to tools such as SAP Business Technology Platform and SAP Cloud ERP, which are critical for managing sensitive business processes securely and efficiently.
This partnership strengthens a 16-year relationship between AWS and SAP, combining enterprise applications expertise with robust cloud infrastructure to address Europe’s evolving digital sovereignty requirements.
At the beginning of this year, AWS unveiled an infrastructure region in Mexico to enable organisations to store data within Mexico, ensuring lower latency and improved application performance.
Why This Matters for CX
The collaboration sets the stage for how European enterprises can deliver digital services to customers. Industries like banking, healthcare, and government services can now roll out AI-enabled applications and customer-facing platforms faster, without lengthy regulatory roadblocks. As a result, end users benefit from smoother onboarding, quicker service delivery, and more personalised experiences.
Equally important, by running SAP’s enterprise applications on an EU-based sovereign cloud, organisations can strengthen the resiliency and compliance of their customer-facing systems. That means fewer service disruptions for customers, more reliable access to digital channels, and stronger assurance that their data is handled under European rules.
